You only need to create a password reset disk for your Windows XP logon password once. You can change your logon password as many times as you want and you can still use the same password reset disk to reset your password if you forget it.

NOTE: Creation of password reset disk requires a USB flash drive or a floppy disk. We recommend using a USB flash drive, as floppy disks may not be as reliable. The Forgotten Password Wizard creates a file called userkey.psw that is only 2KB in size.

Therefore, you only need a low-capacity USB flash drive to store the file. Be sure you store the USB flash drive you use as a password reset disk in a secure place, as anyone can use it to reset your password to one of theirs and access your Windows XP account.

Create a Password Reset Disk

Before you begin creating your password reset disk, you must connect your USB flash drive to the PC. Then, select Control Panel on the Start menu.

On the Control Panel dialog box, click the User Accounts link.

On the User Accounts dialog box, click the Change an account link.

On the Pick an account to change screen, click the account for which you want to create the password reset disk.

Click the Prevent a forgotten password link under Related Tasks.

The Welcome screen of the Forgotten Password Wizard displays. Click Next.

On the Create a Password Reset Disk screen, select the USB flash drive you inserted earlier from the drop-down list. Click Next.

On the Current User Account Password screen, enter your current password in the edit box and click Next.

The progress of the password reset disk creation displays. When the process is finished, click Next.

Click Finish on the Completing the Forgotten Password Wizard screen.

To close the User Accounts dialog box, click the X button in the upper, right corner of the dialog box.

Then, to close the Control Panel, click the X button in the same location on that dialog box.

When you look on your USB flash drive, you will notice the userkey.psw file.

Use the Password Reset Disk to Reset a Forgotten Password

If you have forgotten your password, insert the USB flash drive containing your password reset disk file (userkey.psw). When you enter an incorrect password when logging into your account, a message displays asking if you forgot your password. Click the “use your password reset disk” link in the message that displays.

The Welcome screen of the Password Reset Wizard displays. Click Next.

On the Insert the Password Reset Disk screen, select your USB flash drive from the drop-down list. Click Next.

On the Reset the User Account Password screen enter a new password in the Type a new password edit box and again in the Type the password again to confirm edit box. If you want a hint to display below the Password box on the login screen, enter a hint for yourself in the Type a new password hint edit box. Click Next.

Click Finish on the Completing the Password Reset Wizard screen.

You are returned to the Windows login screen. Type your new password and press Enter to log in.

The password reset disk file works the same way in Windows XP as in Windows 7. Just like in Windows 7, you move the userkey.psw file to another USB flash drive, floppy, or other external drive for safe storage.

You can use this same password reset disk file if you forget your password again, even though you have changed your password. It can also be on a different USB flash drive or a floppy the next time you use it. It is not tied to any hardware.

Win 98/ME/2000/XP/2003/Vista/7

Note: there’s almost never any reason to change this, as Windows does a good job of choosing the right connection. Still, if you want to tweak it to work differently, this is how you would do it.

How to See the Current Network Card Priority

You’ll need to open up a new command prompt window and type in the following command:

netstat -rn | more

The | more part of the command will make sure that it doesn’t go flying off the screen, requiring you to scroll backwards.

At the top of the output you’ll see the Interface List, and the column on the left-hand side shows the metric of the interface. You’ll notice that the loopback interface has the highest priority, followed by my wired Gigabit card, and then my wireless card.

If you’re wondering what all the other cards in the list are about, I’ve got some VPN software loaded, as well as VMware Workstation, all of which create virtual adapters that show up in the list.

How to Change the Network Card Priority

To change the priority, head into Network and Sharing Center and click on the Change adapter settings link on the left-hand side—or you can quickly open the network connections list by typing ncpa.cpl into the Start Menu search box.

Now that we’re in here, choose the network card that you want to change the priority for, right-click it, and choose Properties from the menu.

Now select the Internet Protocol Version 4 item in the list, and click the Properties button.

Now click the Advanced button at the bottom of this window…. getting tired of clicking yet?

And now, finally, we’re at the place where you can make the change. Uncheck the box for Automatic Metric, and then type a number into the Interface Metric textbox. You can consult the list that we found in the command prompt earlier to know what metric to assign—you’ll probably want to assign it something higher than 1, since that’s used for the loopback adapter.

You may want to go ahead and change the priority for your other card as well, just to be sure that it is assigned the proper priority.

Note: again, there’s no reason to mess with this setting unless you are actually having a problem.

The Standard version of MediaMonkey is free for Windows users, is light on system resources, but packs a lot of power for managing your music and iPod. After we installed MediaMonkey and plugged in our iPod Touch 3rd Gen running iOS 4.0.2, it recognized it right away and were able to easily transfer our music collection to it.

Install & Setup MediaMonkey

Installation is straight-forward following the install wizard. When selecting the file type associations, make sure to check iTunes file types.

After installation MediaMonkey starts, you’re presented with a welcome message and the opportunity to purchase the Gold version. Click OK to the message and we can start getting things setup. Or if you want to get the Gold version it’s $34.99 for a lifetime license and you’ll get the following options over the Standard version…

By default it will scan your Music folder which should already include iTunes content if you have it installed.

It will also offer to import all of the data from WMP and iTunes…click OK.

After your content (including purchased) is imported you will see it all in the MediaMonkey Library.

All of our iTunes audio content was imported sans Videos and the iOS Apps. We had our iTunes U lectures, Podcasts, and of course our Music.

You can add or rescan tracks to the Library at anytime from the File menu.

Playlists in MediaMonkey

The playlists feature functions like you would expect from a music player. There are some included by default, you can create your own, and remove the ones you don’t use.

You can remove a Playlist by doing a right-click then Remove, or by simply highlighting a playlist and hitting the Delete key.

Use Your iPod with MediaMonkey

The first time we plugged in our iPod Touch running iOS 4.0.2 it was automatically recognized, out of the box with no additional plugins required which is very cool.

You will also be able to see all of the music on your iPod.

Now you can go through your Library and drag and drop whatever songs you want to your iPod.

Or you can highlight the audio you want on your iPod, right-click and Send to iPod.

There are a lot of neat customizations you can do with your iPod. Right-click on it and select Configure Device.

This opens up the Device Profile window where you have several different options to choose from including Auto-Sync which makes managing the music library easy.

There are several other options you can use to configure how your iPod works with MediaMonkey too. Although some like Auto-Conversion are only available in the Gold version.

Access Music from Home Network Locations

One of the cool features of MediaMonkey is the ability to access music no matter where it lives on your home network. For example, here we have a lot of MP3s, FLAC files, and Audio Books on our Windows Home Server. You can easily navigate to the music files on your home server and add them to your Library.

It also comes with a couple skins by default and you can download others from their site and from the community.

If you aren’t happy with iTunes 9 and think iTunes 10 was a less than stellar upgrade, it might be time to look for alternatives. MediaMonkey provides a lot of options, and plays a large amount of music file formats. If you want an alternative that will allow you to manage your iPod out of the box, MediaMonkey Standard is free and works well.

There are also some cool addons and plugins available out there in the MediaMonkey community that we’ll be taking a look at in future, including ways to better manage your iPod, so stay tuned for that.

For instance, you have created a new password protected account named “Friend” for your friend on your PC. By default, the Friend account user will be able to change his password by entering the current

password. Now, if you want to prevent the Friend account user from changing the account password, you can make it happen by following steps given below:

Please note that this method works only for standard user accounts. In other words, you can’t restrict an Admin user from changing his password.

1. Type lusrmgr.msc in Start menu search box or in the Run dialog box and hit Enter key.

2. In the  Local User and Groups window, click on Users in the left pane to see the list of user accounts.

3. Right-click on the user account name for which you would like to setup up the password restriction, and then select Properties.

4. Next, under the General tab, check the box named User cannot change password. Click Apply button to setup the restriction for the user account.

5. From now onwards, if the user tries to change the password, Windows will show “Windows cannot change the password” error. That’s it.
